Which Sunscreen Should You be Using?

The Environmental Working Group has released their 2010 Sunscreen Guide, listing the best and worst sunscreen products on the market.  What makes a top sunscreen?  According to the EWG, the best sunscreens used minerals zinc or titanium which, unlike chemical sunscreens, don’t have the potential to interfere with hormones.  Also on the avoid list is oxybenzone (a photosensitizer that can increase production of free radicals under illumination) or vitamin A (which also potentially is a photocarcinogen).  The EWG reviewed sunscreens on the market and ranked them from 1-10 with the recommended sunscreens receiving scores of 1 and 2.  Those sunscreens rated “caution” received scores of 3-6 and sunscreens to avoid received scores from 7-10.  Each listing contains detailed rankings covering UVA/UVB protection, stability, and health concerns along with the listed ingredients and notes about any issues.  Under a special section is the “Hall of Shame” with particularly notorious products to avoid.  Also noteworthy is a section on “Sunscreens Exposed:” 9 Surprising Truths“.
