Toddler Friendly Trains in Los Angeles

Like many kids her age, my two year old loves choo choos.  Big or small, she loves to take train rides.  There are a few options for toddler friendly train rides in Los Angeles.

Travel Town is probably the most family friend option.  The small train museum is housed at Griffith Park.  Entering the grounds are free.  There are plenty of grass areas for picnicking and free standing trains to look at.  A few of them are open for exploring and one can be rented out for parties.  There is also an indoor exhibit area and a shop where you can buy all kinds of train themed toys, particularly Thomas trains.  Circling the grounds is a miniature train that you can ride with your children.  Tickets cost $2.50 each with those under one year old riding free. Down the road is Live Steamers but kids have to be 35″ tall to ride those trains.

The Descanso Gardens operates an open ride miniature train on the weekends and on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  The Enchanted Railroad features a 1/8 scale diesel train that loops around a section of the garden.  Children must be at least 18 months old to ride.

For larger trains, the trolleys at both the Grove and Americana shopping malls are great substitute.  The double decker trolley at the Grove is a great experience for toddlers.  Each trolley travels around the shopping centers, with the conductor periodically ringing the bell.  The rides are free.
