GoodGuide
With so much noise from the many companies clamoring to declare their products “organic”, “natural” or “green”, it can be confusing to find those household products and food items that are truly good for you and the environment. GoodGuide is the brainchild of Dara O’Rourke, an associate professor of Environmental and
Labor Policy at UC Berkeley. The site, which is in beta, provides “the world’s largest and most reliable source of information on the health, environmental, and social impacts of the products in your home.” More than 70,000 food, toys, personal care, and household items are rated on a 1-to-10 scale. Each item is given an overall rating and individual ratings in the health, environment, and society categories. The product pages lists more detail about item to explain its ratings. It’s an educational experience to browse through the site. A search on Macaroni and Cheese (a favorite comfort food of mine) reveals that the old Kraft standby of Mac ‘n’ Cheese received a better overall rating than some of the “organic” products.
