All Dressed Up and Nothing to Show
Filed Under General | Leave a Comment
Cable news channels are an odd beast. Pressured by the need to provide BREAKING NEWS NOW 24 hours a day, they resort to an overload of minutia everytime something potentially newsworthy is on the horizon. Take the latest hurricane, Gustav. For the last few days, it’s been on a seemingly unnerving “not again” path of destruction towards New Orleans. Fortunately, it seems to have both diminished in fortitude and hit landfall away from the Big Easy. What are the cable news networks to do? CNN’s news anchors are all dressed up in those pretty bright red slickers. All morning long the headlines have SCREAMED that the levees overtopped. All morning long, the footage has focused on the Industrial Canal levee which, even by Soledad O’Brien’s description was that the “water was lapping over the levee”. Hyperbole, much?

How to Tell a Hoax
Filed Under General | Leave a Comment
We’ve all at some point received an email passed along from some well meaning friend or family member. The nature of the email on the face seems like a good effort to support: helping out a sick child or putting your name on a petition for a good cause. Other times the email is simply a neat story. What’s the common link between these emails? They are all fake.
Before you get caught up in passing along and contributing to the longevity of an email that’s a hoax, here are some pointers to help you determine if an email is true or not.
Many fake emails play on your emotions. “Send this to everyone you know!” is usually a red flag.
The email plays on your emotion. Hoax emails are designed to get you to react emotionally so you don’t stop and think about the legitimacy of the actual message.
The “too cute or neat to be true” message. The facts of the email sounds so fascinating that you can’t resist passing the email along.
Check the urban legends web sites to see if the email has already been reported. The two best Urban Legends sites are: http://urbanlegends.about.com and http://snopes.com
If you can’t find the email on the urban legend sites, I recommend “googling” to email. To do this, go to http://www.google.com and type in the subject of the email plus the words “urban legend”.

Collective Good - Cell Phone Recycling Benefits Society
By James Mosieur
Collective good is broadly defined as ‘all that is good for all people in a given community’. Some organizations claim their product or service adds to the collective good, some preach that the virtues of their operation benefit the collective good. Some have even named their companies after the term hoping in some way to veil their true motivation – making a profit.
To be sure, there are plenty of ways that business can help society. Green businesses, in particular, employ people, add to our GDP, help the environment, and make a profit. These types of operations are truly working for the collective good of their community. Read more

If you don’t want Google to display your address when someone does a search using your phone number you can ask to have it removed.
