Here’s a clever way for bibliophiles to goof off at work without the boss noticing.  Read at Work is a web site that very cleverly disguises itself as a Windows desktop.  Books are housed in folders and organized by type.  You can choose from short stories, novels, and poetry and New Zealand authors.  Doubleclick a file within the folder and the text is contained within a powerpoint document.

Do you remember how it felt when you were a kid, skipping through life without a care in the world? Your biggest worry was should you watch Popeye or Bugs Bunny afterschool. When your parents took you to the candy store you became giddy and happy. Things seemed so simple, because you did not have all of that nervous energy also known as anxiety. Read more

Increase Fuel Economy - Stop the Idling

At over $4.00 per gallon, every drop of fuel is precious, or so I thought until I see people leave their cars idling while they run back into their house to get something they forgot. I see people idling their cars to keep cool in the air conditioning while waiting for their spouse to come out of the store. I see cars idling waiting in line at McDonald’s, I see them idling waiting at the auto tellers and I see them idling waiting to pick up their kids from school.

Those people must not only have a lot of money to burn (pun intended) but they seem to have no regard for any type of conservation or any regard for the environment. There is no faster way to waste gas, money and clean air than idling your car. Read more

Air travel has become a norm nowadays especially for those involved in business and international trading. The needs to meet people from other parts of the world makes air travel a must. For a frequent flyer, there is nothing more satisfactory than getting a cheap airline ticket for their entire journey.

Unfortunately for us, the rising trend of people travelling by air gives an opportunity for airline companies to mark up the airline ticket price since they know people will buy it anyway. Fortunately though, the competition between airline companies forces certain companies to give out discounts on airline ticket price every now and then as a marketing strategy to attract customers. Lack of self-confidence is the largest single factor that holds most people back in life, both in the professional as well as personal sphere. If you are seriously lacking self-confidence and self esteem, it usually means that you don’t believe in yourself or your abilities and that you don’t think your life can be what you want it to be and that you are simply stuck with whatever you are with at the present time. This type of self doubt and negative thinking limits us in all of our life pursuits; and over time, it can also lead to other serious problems such as depression and hostility. That’s why it’s so important to take the time to build self-confidence, both in ourselves and in our children. Read more

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is a government agency that is charged with the job of protecting the consumer from injuries or death as the result of faulty consumer products. This agency has set up guidelines to ensure that products that you may want to purchase for your baby are safe. By doing a few simple checks you can provide your baby with the safest environment possible.

When purchasing a back carrier, there are several items that you should check to ensure that you have chosen a carrier that will be safe for your child. You should check to make sure that the style that you have chosen has a restraining strap to secure your child. You should also check the leg holes to ensure that they are small enough to prevent the baby from slipping out but large enough to prevent chafing on the baby’s legs. The frame of the carrier should have no pinch points, and should have a padded covering in the area around the baby’s face. As long as the carrier that you want to purchase has met all these requirements, you should have no problems with it in the future. Read more

The Story of Stuff is an educational, short (20-minute) video that looks at global production and consumption:

From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world.

The video was put together by the Tide Foundation and Funders Workshop for Sustainable Production and Consumption.  Accompanying the video are links to additional resources and a blog.
